History of Birthday Cake and Candles tradition

This weeks topic is about birthdays. In the past the only difference between cake and bread, was that cake was a bit sweeter. In the 15th century bakers came up with the idea to sell one layer cakes for weddings and birthdays.More complicated cakes with icing and more than one layer were available exclusively for the extremely wealthy.

Now on to the candle tradition ..... Some say that the Greeks started the tradition in order to honor/celebrate the gods and goddesses for their birthdays. They were also thought to grant magical wishes(in urban folk tale).
